Sony Cyber-shot RX100 IV review

August 25, 2015 - Digital Trends

Like the auto industry, camera makers refine and tweak their models for every new year or so. The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 series is a classic example: Barely 12 months after the $800 RX100 Mark III made the scene, the new Mark IV ($1,000) has arrived....

Sony RX100 IV

July 30, 2015 - MobileTechReview.com

The Sony RX100 mark 4 hardly needs an introduction, after all it's the fourth generation in one of the most successful lines of popular high end pocket cameras. It still rates at 20.1MP, but the Exmor RS 1" stacked sensor design is radically new, and...

Back from Paris with 1064 still frames. I find a high level of technical knowledge in these Amazon reviews. My review will be short. Without a great deal of research, I bought the RX100 IV cold turkey based upon a highly favorable DP Review article. I own other high end Sony photographic products. I'm into intuitive camera menus. I took the camera out of the box for the first time sitting on the eastbound flight to CDG. Never looked at the user manual. Ten days later, I can positively state that I made an exceptionally good choice. If you are locked on the horns of a dilemma ... having compared equivalents, price, resolution, speed, video vs. still, etc. etc. etc. Just stop it! Go to your computer, type in your credit card number and push SEND. Recommend the Sony case, a rear display HARD protective screen, extra battery and the most expensive 64GB SD card available.

Compared to my RX100ii the images produced by the new RX100iv are fantastic, especially for this size of camera. Viewing on a 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display the IQ is awesome. I wont go into all the technical aspects as there are lots of other references available. From a critical user perspective this camera delivers on all fronts. Sure you can get better quality if you are prepared to sacrifice the pocket-ability size of this camera. I sold off my Nikon D800 a while ago and purchased the RX1 so I have some good reference points to base my opinion.I have done side by side comparisons with my brothers Panasonic LX100, my Sony RX1 (not a fair comparison but I had to have a high reference point) & my RX100ii. For video the Panasonic wins for me (Mac friendly & the colors seem to pop) but when it comes to IQ, EVF and size, the RX100iv wins hands-down over the Panasonic & RX100ii.If you are looking to upgrade from the RX100iii or Panasonic LX100 then its probably not worth it. I love the new RX100iv & for its size nothing out there delivers so much bang for the buck. For me its a winner.Highly recommended

First off, I won’t list all of the specs or features because you can easily find them online. I was looking for a camera that I could use for action shots without having to break out the DLSR all the time. I need high quality images and this camera fits the bill very nicely.Pros:Image qualitySmall sizeViewfinderArticulating screenFast Image processingCons:ExpensiveLimited length of videoYou can shoot bursts at 16 frames per second at max resolution. Autofocus is VERY fast with almost no lag.I’ll be using this a lot indoors and sometimes with close subjects, so the 24-70 mm lens on this camera will be fine. At greater distances, I’ll still use the DSLR with a longer lens. Just keep in mind that even though you’re almost spending a thousand dollars, there are much better options if you looking for a wide zoom range. However, the RX100 IV will give you EXCELLENT QUALITY IMAGES. I have no complaints about the image quality. It far surpasses the quality of most cameras of this size that I have used. The camera has a pop-up viewfinder that has amazing resolution. This is extremely helpful in direct sunlight where the main screen is difficult to see. The articulating 3 inch screen is extremely useful for getting shots at strange angles (along the ground for example) and still has decent resolution. No complaints on the viewfinder or main screen. There main screen is not a touchscreen, but I prefer having physical dials and buttons anyway. The high frame rate video will be fun to experiment with. However, the amount of time you can capture the video is limited; 2 seconds at 960 fps. It captures 4K video but is limited to a file size of 4 GB or 29 minutes whichever comes first. This works out to about 5 minutes of 4K video before the maximum file size is reached. I’m using this camera mainly for still pictures and it does great! If I wanted to shoot a lot of 4K video, I would buy a dedicated video camera. This camera is very small considering what it can do. It will be very handy to keep it in my pocket, ready at a seconds notice. I’ll be able to capture many more shots simply because of the size of the camera and being able to keep it with me at all times. I’m not crazy about the control ring around the lens, but I’m sure I’ll get more comfortable with it as time goes on.Overall, this is a great camera that produces excellent images. If you don’t need to shoot long 4K videos, I would highly recommend this small and fast camera.
